A set of teak garden benches in Los Angeles, arranged in a shallow curve under a mature canopy. After a few years outdoors, the wood had turned grey, the finish had broken down, and dust and leaf litter had settled into the grain. The owner wanted the original warm honey color back without replacing anything.

Pressure wash

Teak gets its glow back only after a proper wash. We used a turbo-nozzle on a pressure washer at a controlled distance — close enough to pull out the greyed surface layer and the embedded dirt from the slats, far enough not to furrow the grain. We worked slat-by-slat along the grain direction, not across it.

Dry out

After the wash, the wood looked pale and matte — that’s the clean, unfed surface. Teak has to dry fully before oil goes on, otherwise moisture gets trapped under the finish. We let the benches air-dry for a full day in the shade.

Oil treatment

Then teak oil — applied by hand with a lint-free rag, worked into the grain, wiped off the excess. The oil re-saturates the fibers, pulls back the honey warmth, and lays down a protective finish that lets the wood breathe. We did two coats, letting each one soak in and dry.

Why maintain instead of replace

Good teak furniture is expensive to replace. If the frame and joints are still solid, a wash-and-oil refresh brings the wood back to life for a fraction of the cost — and extends the useful life of the piece by years. Done once a year, the oil keeps the honey color stable instead of letting it drift back to grey.
