Decks fail when shortcuts are taken on footings, joist spacing and fastener choice. We dig footings below the frost line, use galvanized or stainless hardware that won’t bleed rust through your boards, and follow the joist span tables for the lumber grade. The result is a deck that stays flat and tight for 15+ years — not one that gets springy after three.

Frequently Asked — Deck Building

How long does deck construction take?

Small ground-level wood deck (under 200 sq ft): 4–7 days. Elevated 300+ sq ft with railings and stairs: 2–3 weeks. Composite or custom: add 1 week.

Do I need a permit?

Most cities require permits for decks over 30 inches off the ground or attached to the house. We handle permit submittal and inspections.

Redwood vs composite — which is better?

Redwood looks more natural and costs less upfront, but needs staining every 2–3 years. Composite costs more but is virtually maintenance-free for 25 years.

How deep do you set footings?

Concrete piers minimum 18–24 inches deep depending on soil and code, with proper sized concrete tubes and embedded post anchors.

Can you build over concrete patio?

Yes — we use sleeper systems with proper drainage gap on top of existing concrete. Great way to cover cracked patio cheaply.

Do you stain after building?

Wood needs 2–6 weeks to cure before staining. We can schedule a return visit, or you can apply stain yourself once it’s dry.
