New solid shaker-style interior doors with custom craftsman header molding, matte black mortise levers, and a clean white paint finish — installed throughout a renovated Los Angeles home by ProHands Home Improvement. Each opening trimmed with a stepped craftsman header that lifts an otherwise standard door into an architectural detail.

Project Overview

The owners were finishing a full interior renovation and didn’t want builder-grade hollow-core slabs hung in plain casing. We replaced every interior door in the floorplan with solid one-panel shaker doors, painted them in a matte white, hung them on full-mortise hinges, and trimmed each opening with a custom-built craftsman header — a stepped block top above flat-stock side casing. The same detail repeats across every doorway, so the trim package reads as one design language through the whole house.

Why the Custom Header Matters

Standard pre-hung doors come with a thin colonial casing on three sides. It is fine on a builder spec, but it disappears against painted walls and does nothing for the architecture. A custom craftsman header swaps the top casing for a wider, taller, stepped block — the same detail you see on original 1920s LA bungalows. The doors instantly read more architectural, the rooms feel taller, and the trim becomes part of the design instead of just a frame.

Why Solid Shaker Doors (Not Hollow-Core)

Hollow-core doors feel cheap when you close them — they don’t sound right, they don’t carry hardware well, and a busted hollow door is impossible to repair without replacing the whole slab. Solid shaker doors close with the weight you expect in a quality home, hold mortise hardware properly, and give you a paintable substrate that lasts decades. Cost-per-door is higher, but you pay for the door once.

Los Angeles Pricing Notes

A custom interior door package — solid shaker slabs, custom craftsman trim, mortise hinges, lever sets, paint, demo, and finish — is a premium upgrade priced per opening, not a single quote. We bid each project after a site visit because door count, opening sizes, wall conditions, paint scope, and hardware choices all move the number. Free same-day estimates anywhere in LA, Glendale, Burbank, or Pasadena.
