A pair of fully custom wrought-iron handrails that we designed, fabricated and welded in our shop from raw steel, then installed at the front entry of a classic Spanish-style home in Los Angeles. Every piece of iron in these photos — the frames, the twisted balusters, the basket spirals, the knuckle collars and the hand-formed scroll ends — came off a saw, a bender, a torch, a welder and a grinder in our own shop before it was ever anchored to the house.

What the client asked for

Real handrails that make the stairs safer for family coming up and down, in a style that respects a house that has looked this way since it was first built. Not an off-the-shelf utility rail bolted on after the fact. Traditional ironwork, blacksmith-style — twisted square balusters, basket-and-knuckle ornament between them, a continuous grab rail with a hand-formed scroll at each end. Satin black, not glossy.

Fabrication — in our shop, from raw iron

Both rails were cut, bent, welded up and finished in our shop before anything got moved to the site:

Installation

Each rail sits on 4″ × 4″ steel base plates anchored into the concrete pads at the bottom tread, with the top ends tied into the stucco wall. Rail height, grab-rail profile and the gap between balusters follow current California residential code — these are built as safety handrails first and architectural pieces second, even though they read mostly as architectural pieces.

How it reads in context

The symmetric view down the stairs is the one that matters — matched hand-formed scrolls on both sides, basket ornament lining up at the same height on both rails, and the top rail stepping evenly down with each tread because we snapped the line on site before final welding. From the wider shots you can see how the ironwork sits in the house instead of fighting it.
