Narrow Los Angeles side yards are brutal on planting — too much heat reflected off stucco walls, not enough soil volume in the ground, nothing to anchor climbing plants. For this project we built a set of custom tall steel-frame planter boxes clad in composite wood-look panels, matched to the home’s existing steel profiled fence. The planters give the plants real soil volume, lift them off the hot pavers, and turn the corridor into a continuous garden line.

Why these aren’t off-the-shelf
Standard retail planters either rot (wood against moisture), discolor in UV (plastic), or rust through at the seams (thin steel). We built these the way we build gates and fences in the shop: welded steel-tube frame for the structure, composite wood-look boards for the cladding, bottom drainage and insect screen. Scaled to the specific side-yard dimensions of this house and painted to match the existing steel profiled fence that runs alongside.

Fabrication
Each box is welded square tube — frame first, then the panel slats clip onto the frame with concealed fasteners. We use a corner clamp to hold the tube at a dead-square 90° while tacking the welds, then run the final beads once everything is set. All welds are inside the frame so the finish surface is clean.

Panels
Composite wood-look boards for the cladding — same material family as the home’s steel-fence wood-look panels, so the planters read as a continuation of the fence line rather than as separate furniture. Zero maintenance: no stain to re-apply, no rot, no insects. UV-stable color that holds for years.

Lattice trellis
For the planters that hold climbing plants (jasmine, roses) we built tall redwood lattice panels that bolt to the back of the frame. The trellis rises 6+ feet above the planter rim and gives the plant a full vertical face to grow against. Separate panel so a client can swap or remove it later without touching the planter itself.

Project summary
- Scope: custom steel-frame planter boxes for a narrow LA side yard
- Frame: welded square steel tube, powder-coat satin black
- Cladding: composite wood-look slats, matched to the home’s steel profiled fence
- Drainage: bottom drainage holes with insect screen; raised legs to keep the boxes off wet pavers
- Trellis option: tall redwood lattice panels bolted to the back of select units
