A custom steel picket railing built and installed on top of a stucco retaining wall in a hillside garden — code-compliant pickets, welded posts, mounted to the wall with proper anchors, and finished in white powder-coat. Installed by ProHands Home Improvement in Los Angeles.

Project Overview
The site is a hillside property with a built-up retaining wall along the upper garden line. The wall does the structural job, but on its own it leaves a long fall-edge that needs a code-compliant guardrail. The owner wanted something durable, low-maintenance, and visually quiet — no wood that warps, no aluminum that dents, no decorative cast iron that fights with the planting. We built a custom steel picket railing in clean vertical bars, welded posts, anchored into the wall, finished in matte white to disappear against the planting and stucco.

Why Steel (Not Aluminum)
Aluminum picket railings from the big-box catalogue are cheaper to buy and faster to install, but they dent on impact, soften the look of a custom home, and rely on factory powder-coat that chalks in the LA sun within a few seasons. Solid steel is heavier, holds tighter tolerances on long runs, takes a sprayed automotive-grade powder-coat that lasts, and stands up to the wind loading that hillside lots routinely see. For a custom build going onto a retaining wall above a drop, the right material is steel.

Build Specs
- Solid steel posts (welded square tube) on engineered spacing
- Vertical steel pickets at code-compliant spacing — under 4″ between bars per Los Angeles guardrail code
- Continuous welded top and bottom rails — no field-screwed splices
- Posts anchored into the stucco-faced retaining wall with stainless masonry anchors and a neoprene gasket to prevent rust bleed at the wall face
- Powder-coat finish: zinc-rich primer + matte white topcoat, oven-cured
- End caps welded closed on all top rails so water cannot pool inside the tubing
- Height meets LA guardrail height where a fall hazard exists adjacent to the wall
Anchoring to a Stucco Wall
This is the part most installers cut corners on, and it is the part that fails first if cut. Stucco is a finish, not a structural anchor — you need the bolts to find the masonry or block underneath, sit on stainless steel anchors with the correct embed depth, and use a gasket and washer system that does not let water collect at the post foot. We core every anchor point, set the post in compression with the proper hardware, and seal the foot. Done right, the joint between the post and the wall stays clean for years.

Los Angeles Pricing Notes
A custom welded steel picket railing — material, fabrication, finish, hillside install, anchoring to a stucco-clad wall — is a premium category, not a catalogue assembly. We bid each run after a site visit because length, post spacing, wall condition, anchor type, finish color, and access all affect the number.
