Not every job we take is a kitchen remodel. A theater group in Los Angeles came to us with a drawing: three large modular stage set pieces, matched arched tops, platforms at specific heights, able to be rolled on and off between scenes, able to break down for storage, able to take real weight. We fabricated them.

From drawing to steel

The whole project ran off the group’s drawings. We worked through the geometry, confirmed load points and connection details, and broke each unit down into welded sub-assemblies that would fit through a standard doorway. Every piece was cut, mitered, and TIG-welded in our shop, then test-assembled before paint.

Modular on purpose

The frames are not one giant welded piece. They’re three self-contained units that lock together with pinned connections — the pins are stored right on the frames, tied to lanyards so they don’t walk off backstage. One stagehand can disconnect a unit, roll it off, and reset for the next scene. For off-season storage, the modules nest flat.

Platforms & load path

Each frame has an integral platform at a defined height. The platform tops are sound-dampened — a dense core layer absorbs the hollow thump that a bare steel plate would make under footfall, so the actors can move on them without the audience hearing it. The load path runs from the platform through the welded cross-members into the frame rails and down into the heavy-duty casters.

Casters that actually hold

Theater sets have one reliable failure mode: the cheap caster on a borrowed base dumps a prop in the middle of a scene. We spec’d heavy-duty swivel casters with brake-and-lock pedals rated well above the actual load — so once the module is positioned, the brake drops and it’s not moving until someone releases it on purpose.

Finish

Satin matte black powder-ready prep, finish-coated black so it recedes into stage lighting instead of catching glare. Welds dressed smooth at every visible joint.
