A custom horizontal aluminum slat pedestrian gate completed for a hillside home in Los Angeles. Matte black, semi-privacy 2″ slats in a welded aluminum frame, keypad smart lock, and a matching slat fence running along the top of the retaining wall. The result is a modern, clean side-yard entry that reads as a single architectural line against the home’s white stucco walls.

System spec — aluminum slat
The system we spec and install for this style is manufactured by Candy Maestro Fencing Solutions. The structural numbers are what make it worth paying for over a cheaper off-the-shelf slat kit:
- Slats: 2.0 mm aluminum with internal reinforcement — no flex, no “oil-can” sound in wind
- Panel & gate frame: 2.5 mm welded aluminum frame — the gate stays square for the life of the system
- Posts: 2.0 mm aluminum post covers over 3″×3″ 11-gauge steel structural posts — the aluminum sleeve is the finish; the steel inside carries the load
- Finish: Electrostatic powder coat with a 5-year finish warranty
- Spacing: Semi-privacy (½” gap between slats) or solid privacy (no gap) — this project is semi-privacy
- Gate options: Single swing (shown here), double swing, or sliding

Why aluminum slat for this site
- Hillside / coastal LA environment. Aluminum doesn’t rust, doesn’t need yearly maintenance, and the powder coat holds up to full sun — no re-finishing cycle.
- Semi-privacy by design. The ½” gap breaks line-of-sight from the sidewalk but keeps the courtyard feeling open from inside — the client gets privacy without a solid wall.
- Clean lines against stucco. Matte black on white stucco is a signature LA mid-century pairing; the horizontal slats read as a drawn line rather than a utility fence.
- Non-combustible. For properties in or near fire zones, an aluminum slat gate is an easier conversation with insurers than a wood fence.
Install detail
The structural 3″×3″ steel posts set into concrete footings along the top of the existing stucco knee wall; the aluminum post covers slip over and conceal them. The gate hangs on heavy-duty self-closing hinges with the keypad lock on the strike side. The matching slat fence section runs between the gate posts and the house wall, closing the opening wall-to-wall.
