A complete front yard fence built by ProHands Home Improvement for a craftsman bungalow in Los Angeles — natural cedar pickets first installed clean and unfinished, then transformed with a custom matte black finish that pulls the entire facade together.

Project Overview
The owners of a classic dark-trim craftsman wanted a low decorative perimeter fence that defined the front yard without closing it off. We built the full run from solid cedar — pressure-treated posts, hand-cut pickets, mitered top rails — and delivered it clean and natural so they could live with the look before committing to a finish.
A few weeks later we came back and rolled the entire fence in a premium matte black exterior coating. The transformation is the kind that re-frames the whole property.
Before — Natural Cedar Install
The original build is honest construction: 4×4 cedar posts set in concrete below frost line, 2× horizontal top and bottom rails, vertical 1×4 pickets spaced evenly with consistent reveals, all fastened with hot-dipped galvanized hardware so nothing telegraphs through future paint. We left the cedar unfinished so the homeowners could see grain, joinery, and proportions in the as-built state.

After — Custom Black Paint Finish
The finish is a premium exterior acrylic in a deep flat black — sprayed on the gates and rolled on the field for the most uniform result. Two finish coats over a primer, with end-grain sealing on every cut. Hinges and hardware were masked and re-installed clean.
The fence now reads as one continuous architectural element instead of stand-alone pickets — it sharpens the trim lines of the house and disappears as a “fence” while functioning as a strong edge to the yard.

What’s Included in a Build Like This
- Cedar lumber: pressure-treated 4×4 posts, kiln-dried cedar pickets, cedar rails
- Posts set in concrete below frost line
- Hot-dipped galvanized fasteners throughout
- Double swing gate with heavy-duty hinges and latch
- End-grain sealing on every cut, then prime + 2 finish coats
- Site prep, layout, post-install cleanup and old-fence haul-off if needed
Why Build Cedar, Then Paint It Black?
Cedar is naturally rot-resistant and dimensionally stable, so it’s the correct lumber for a paint job that needs to last. Cheap pine pickets warp, cup, and bleed sap through paint within a couple of seasons; cedar holds a finish for years. Black flat exterior paint over cedar reads premium because the substrate underneath is premium — the geometry stays straight, the picket spacing stays even, and the finish stays flat.
Front Yard Fence Pricing Notes (Los Angeles Market)
For a build of this scope — solid cedar, ~50 linear feet of perimeter, one double gate, with a separate paint phase — the typical Los Angeles range is materials-and-labor at the upper end of standard front-yard fence work. We bid each project to spec after a site visit because slope, soil, demo requirements, and permit conditions vary by lot. Free same-day estimates in LA, Glendale, Burbank, and Pasadena.
