How to Fix a Wobbly Toilet
A wobbly toilet isn’t just annoying—it can also cause leaks, damage your floor, and lead to costly repairs if not fixed promptly. Fortunately, fixing a wobbly toilet is usually straightforward and doesn’t require special tools. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to stabilize your toilet and prevent future problems.

1. Why is Your Toilet Wobbly?
A toilet may wobble due to several reasons:
Loose Bolts: The toilet bolts (also called closet bolts) securing the toilet to the floor may be loose.
Damaged Wax Ring: The wax ring that seals the toilet to the drain flange may be compressed or damaged, causing instability.
Uneven Floor: An uneven or damaged floor can cause the toilet to rock back and forth.
Broken Flange: The flange (the pipe fitting that connects the toilet to the drain pipe) may be cracked or corroded.
2. Tools and Materials Needed
Tools:
Adjustable wrench or socket wrench
Putty knife
Level
Utility knife
Screwdriver
Caulking gun
Materials:
Toilet shims (plastic or rubber)
Wax ring (if replacement is needed)
New closet bolts (if old ones are corroded)
Caulk (for sealing the base of the toilet)
3. Tightening the Bolts
Check the Bolts: Start by removing the plastic covers at the base of the toilet to access the closet bolts.
Tighten the Bolts: Use an adjustable wrench or socket wrench to tighten the bolts. Be careful not to overtighten, as this can crack the porcelain base.
Test for Stability: Check if the toilet still wobbles. If it’s stable, replace the plastic caps, and you’re done. If it’s still wobbly, proceed to the next step.
4. Leveling the Toilet with Shims
Place Shims: Gently rock the toilet to identify the gaps. Insert plastic or rubber shims under the base until the toilet is level and stable.
Check with a Level: Place a level on the toilet bowl to ensure it’s even from front to back and side to side.
Trim the Shims: Once the toilet is level, trim the excess shims using a utility knife.
5. Replacing the Wax Ring (If Necessary)
If tightening the bolts and shimming the toilet doesn’t solve the problem, the wax ring may be damaged or compressed.
Turn Off Water Supply: Shut off the water supply to the toilet and flush to drain the tank and bowl.
Remove the Toilet: Disconnect the water line, remove the bolts, and carefully lift the toilet off the flange.
Replace the Wax Ring: Scrape off the old wax ring with a putty knife and install a new one.
Reinstall the Toilet: Carefully place the toilet back over the flange, pressing down to compress the new wax ring.
Secure the Bolts: Tighten the bolts evenly without overtightening.
Reconnect Water Supply: Reconnect the water line and turn on the supply.
6. Seal the Base
Apply Caulk: Apply a bead of caulk around the base of the toilet to seal it to the floor. This prevents moisture from getting under the toilet, which can cause mold and floor damage.
Smooth the Caulk: Use a wet finger or caulking tool to smooth out the caulk for a clean finish.
