Tools and Materials You’ll Need:

1. A new garbage disposal unit.

2. Phillips and flathead screwdrivers.

3. Adjustable wrench or socket wrench.

4. Plumber’s putty.

5. Bucket or pan (to catch water).

6. Dish soap and sponge (for cleanup).

7. Allen wrench (usually provided with the new unit).

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Turn Off Power

Locate the circuit breaker that powers the garbage disposal and switch it off.

Ensure no one turns it on accidentally during the installation.

2. Disconnect the Disposal

Unplug the unit from the outlet under the sink.

Use a bucket to catch any water left in the pipes and disconnect the drainpipes using a wrench.

If the disposal is connected to a dishwasher, detach the dishwasher hose as well.

3. Remove the Old Disposal

Insert an Allen wrench into the mounting ring (typically located at the bottom of the disposal) to loosen it.

Rotate the disposal counterclockwise to detach it from the sink mounting assembly.

Remove the mounting assembly if needed by unscrewing it from the sink drain.

4. Install the New Mounting Assembly

Apply plumber’s putty to the sink flange and press it into the sink drain.

From below, attach the mounting ring and secure it with screws.

Tighten the mounting assembly to ensure a watertight seal.

5. Connect the Disposal

If required, remove the dishwasher knockout plug by tapping it out with a screwdriver.

Attach the dishwasher hose to the disposal’s inlet and tighten with a clamp.

Connect the disposal to the sink drain and secure it with the mounting ring by twisting it clockwise.

Reattach the main drainpipe to the disposal.

6. Wire the Disposal

For plug-in models, simply reconnect the disposal to the outlet.

For hardwired models, connect the wires to the disposal as per the manufacturer’s instructions (usually found in the manual).

Ensure the ground wire is attached to the grounding screw.

7. Test for Leaks

Run water through the sink to check for leaks around the connections.

Tighten screws or fittings as needed.

8. Restore Power

Turn the circuit breaker back on and test the garbage disposal by running water and switching it on.
